Inspired Mosaic Art and Jewelry

"Memoria" (2014), Undulation Mosaic in Venetian Glass Smalti, Trasparenti, Dalle de Verre

I am interested in the phenomenon of memory and the psychology of landscape--why certain people and places are especially meaningful to us.  In the past five years, Mosaic Art has become a way for me to connect more deeply to spirit and to participate in the process of creation.  I work guided by emotion and my experience as a woman, whether the mosaic project is representative or abstract.   I cut my materials by hand, using carbide-steel hammer/hardie or wheeled nippers, faithful to the 4,000 year old medium.  My vision is influenced by wandering the world, and by wondrous places where I have roots, among these Italy, Spain, Appalachia, the Carolinas, the Hudson Valley, and the Southwest.  I am drawn to organic shapes, sundrenched colors, and the juxtaposition of rustic and precious materials.  I am especially inspired by the courageous art of Georgia O'Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, Antoni Gaudi', and Marco De Luca.  I owe much gratitude to my teachers for our brief but inspiring days together... Luciana Notturni (Studio Arte del Mosaico, Ravenna, Italy-2001), Matteo Randi (Chicago Mosaic School-2014), Liz Learmont (Sculpture/Mosaic Studio, Sedona, Arizona-2018), Uta-Maria Krapf (Painting Studio, Marfa, Texas-2019), Karen Ami and Etty Hasak (Chicago Mosaic School at Bethany Arts Community, Ossining, New York-2019).  Perhaps the greatest learning experience was a yearlong battle with a rare encephalitis between the summers of 2017 and 2018, and the unexpected gifts of hallucination and imagination that this difficult journey contributed to my art.
