"There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in."--Leonard Cohen
I find great beauty in objects that are broken or somehow imperfect. In the past five years, Mosaic Art has become a way for me to connect more deeply to spirit and to participate in the process of creation. I work guided by both emotion and experience, whether the mosaic project is representative or abstract. I cut Venetian glass, marble, gold leaf, and found objects by hand, using carbide-steel hammer and hardie or wheeled nippers, faithful to my Italian heritage and training. There is constant dialogue with these raw materials, since they don't always break the way I plan, and the surprises often suggest a different path than the one initially envisioned. My esthetic is influenced by wandering the world, and by wondrous places where I have roots, among these Italy, Spain, Appalachia, the Carolinas, the Hudson Valley, and the Southwest. I am drawn to organic shapes, sundrenched colors, and the juxtaposition of rustic and precious materials. I am especially inspired by the art of Georgia O'Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, Antoni Gaudi', and Marco De Luca. I owe much gratitude to my teachers for our brief but inspiring time together... Luciana Notturni (Studio Arte del Mosaico, Ravenna, Italy-2001), Matteo Randi (Chicago Mosaic School-2014), and Liz Learmont (Sculpture/Mosaic Studio, Sedona, Arizona-2018). And thank you to my fellow RiverArts Artists, who lend their light to the Rivertowns and the World.
